We Finally Know What Caused A Self-Driving Vehicle Death

November 20, 2019
The Hayes Law Firm, APC

Most people either fear self-driving cars or cannot wait until they get to ride in one. It seems like we have been waiting for these vehicles to hit the roadways for years, but they are still largely in the testing phases. However, we now have a final report into what happened the night of the world’s first death by a self-driving car, which happened to be an Uber vehicle.

At the Hayes Law Firm, APC, we are here to help when you need an Uber accident attorney. Our Montebello team will secure the compensation you deserve.

What does the report say?

We want to take you to Arizona, to a crash that drew worldwide attention in 2018. The incident involved a self-driving Uber vehicle that was being tested on the streets of Tempe, Arizona. On November 20, 2019, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released the results of its investigation into the crash that killed 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg.

Many expected that the NTSB would come down hard in the robotic vehicle. However, they have placed most of the blame on the driver who was inside the Uber vehicle that was supposed to be monitoring the ride and take over if anything dangerous was about to occur.

Rafaela Vasquez was the safety driver int eh vehicle, but investigators have discovered that she was watching episodes of The Voice on her phone, which is a violation of Uber’s policy. They say that she was looking at her phone for over a third of the total time she was in the self-driving vehicle.

As technology evolves, safety drivers are needed. The Uber vehicle did detect the Herzberg was crossing the street with her bicycle, but it did not recognize her as human. Had the Uber driver been monitoring the roadway as required, she could have stopped the vehicle before the fatal impact.

California is no stranger to car accidents

During the latest reporting year in this state, there were 273,000 people injured and 3,602 people killed in car accidents, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). While we do not have exact numbers of how many ridesharing accidents occurred, we do know that they occur. We also know that there will be more and more self-driving accidents in the future. Determining who is liable in these cases may become very difficult.
