Vulture Blamed in Motorcycle Accident That Killed Couple

Motorcyclists know that a road is a dangerous place—perils seem to come out of nowhere and can crop up around any corner. One ill-fated Kansas couple found out the hard way that one can never know what the road ahead holds, especially when traveling via motorcycle. Brandon and Jennifer Husband, a married couple, were traveling on a rural road in the south of Kansas when Brandon was struck in the head by a vulture that emerged from a nearby ditch. Brandon lost control of his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, subsequently losing contact with the roadway, and colliding with a barbed wire fence, overturning the bike.

Kansas Highway Patrol says the accident occurred around 75 miles southwest of Wichita, outside the town of Medicine Lodge. Brandon Husband was pronounced dead on the scene, and his wife expired a few hours later at a local hospital. Neither of them was wearing helmets, according to authorities.

Although this appears by all accounts to be a freak accident, it doesn’t change the fact that motorcyclists are not always given the proper respect afforded to them under the law when they traverse our nation’s highways. If you have been involved in a motorcycle accident, contact Hayes Law Firm, APC, and our Montebello motorcycle accident attorney now to discover what legal remedies are available to you.

Helmets Save Lives

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tells us that people wearing a motorcycle helmet have a 29 percent greater chance of living through a crash than those that do not. A total of 19 states, including California, have universal motorcycle helmet laws in place requiring that all motorcycle riders and their passengers wear helmets. Only around 60 percent of riders wear helmets, notes the NHTSA. In states where universal helmet laws exist, rates of use are significantly higher.

When properly worn, helmets can reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 69 percent, according to the U.S. government’s Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.

Although a motorcycle helmet obviously cannot guard against all injuries that can be sustained during a motorcycle crash, it does provide protection to one of the body’s most vulnerable areas—the head. According to the director of the motorcycle and RV division of insurance giant GEICO, Steve Stojanovich, the importance of a helmet cannot be overestimated. Stojanovich calls the helmet the very most important piece of safety equipment a motorcyclist can use. He goes on to say that riders should be aware of the dangers they face when a helmet is not worn.
