Riverside Bicycle Accident Attorney

Bicycles are prohibited on Riverside sidewalks unless there is a sign posted that specifically permits bicycles on those sidewalks. Because of this, bicyclists have no choice but to share Riverside roads with automobiles. California law provides that bicyclists are permitted to operate on California roads and for the most part, they have the same rights and responsibilities as automobile drivers. Unfortunately, as Riverside bicycle accident attorneys know, automobile drivers frequently do not respect bicyclists’ rights on the road and that raises bicyclists’ risks of accidents and serious injuries.

California bicycle law

Some of California’s most frequently violated bicycle laws that result in bicycle accident injuries and fatalities are described below:

  • Automobiles must maintain a three-foot buffer between the vehicle and the bicycle when passing bicyclists and when that is not possible, drivers must slow down to pass and they may do so only if it does not put bicyclists at risk.
  • Drivers may not cross bicycle lanes except where the line is dotted to allow for turns, but only when entering the bicycle lane will not cause a collision with a bicyclist traveling in the lane.
  • Drivers and bicyclists must obey traffic signs and signals and other applicable traffic laws.

Riverside bicycle accidents and fatalities

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, in 2016 there were 319 bicycle accident injuries and fatalities reported in Riverside County and 88 of those occurred in the city of Riverside. Bicyclists and motorcyclists have a duty to operate safely and legally on Riverside roads, but bicyclists should participate in additional safe practices in order to keep themselves safe from negligent drivers.

Four basic safety tips

The California Department of Motor Vehicles provides that in addition to following California rules of the road, bicyclists should follow four basic safety tips, described below.

  • Maintain control of your bicycle – The DMV recommends riding an appropriately sized and adjusted bicycle and to conduct regular bicycle inspections to make sure that bicycles are in good working order.
  • Protect yourself – California law provides that anyone under 18 years old must wear a helmet when riding a bicycle, but the DMV recommends that everyone wears an appropriately fitted helmet worn per the manufacturer directions.
  • Be alert and visible – Be prepared to stop for vehicles that may suddenly stop or pull out in front of you. Always use hand signals to indicate your intentions to drivers around you and be prepared to take evasive action when you sense that vehicles may turn in front of you. Make yourself visible with bicycle lights and reflective and brightly colored clothing.
  • Safe riding – Ride in a safe lane position and ride in the same direction as traffic.

Riverside bicycle accident attorneys know that even the safest bicyclists who take every possible precaution are unable to avoid every accident with negligent or reckless automobile drivers.
