Auto giant General Motors is in the hot seat after complaints started rolling in about engines catching fire in its 2017 to 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 Series and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 Series heavy-duty trucks and 2019 Silverado 4500, 5500 and 6500 Series commercial trucks. The company issued a recall of the affected models that involves 325,000 total units, says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

At the Hayes Law Firm, we know how much you have riding on the safety of the vehicle that you drive. Recalls like this are scary, but unfortunately, not all that uncommon. If you have been injured by a dangerous vehicle or other product, call our office right away to discuss your situation with our Montebello defective product liability attorney.

Increased Fire Risk

GM’s latest recall only affects models equipped with its 6.6-liter Duramax diesel engine and optional engine block heaters. According to the NHTSA, a faulty engine block heater cord ha the potential to fail on the affected models, which increase the risk of vehicle fires. The engine block heater plugs into an external power outlet; its purpose is to warm the engine, which allows for more expedient starts when the weather outside turns cold. In the case of the recalled GM trucks mentioned above, there can be a short circuit between the cord and the connection between the block and the cord, which is where the increased fire risk lies.

No, Fix Yet

GM is still working on a fix for the affected vehicles, and it has not yet announced when it will reach out to the owners of the affected models. Until then, General Motors says that owners of the affected vehicles may have a few warning signs to look for prior to a fire starting. These include noticing a burning smell or smoke or noting lessened performance from the engine block heater. In an affected truck, coolant from the block heater may pool beneath the vehicles. Vehicle owners with questions may contact GM at 586-596-1733 and mention recall number N182206310 for further information.

19 Reported Fires

This particular recall occurred after 19 reported fires related to the block heater issue. There have, to date, been no reported crashes, injuries or deaths due to the issue. However, the longer it takes to get a fix for the issue, the more likely there are to be an additional report of fires and a heightened risk for injuries and even fatalities.
